Rebecca Rankin, 33, was born on March 13, 1978, and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at home surrounded by her family. Becca had prayed a prayer inviting Jesus into her life when she was only 3 years old and seemed to really understand and mean it. But when she was about 14, she realized she hadn’t seen the fruit in her life, so really repented of her sins and turned her life over to God at that point, trusting in God’s saving grace as in John 5:24 “He who hears my word and believes in Him who sent me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life!”
Becca was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, friend, etc. Her passions were ministering for the Lord, writing, friendships, and music. She loved teaching speech and writing at the Network as well as teaching private violin lessons. She also loved being able to stay home and serve her family. She had been courageously battling health issues the last 3 years and never really gave up, but her body finally did.
She is survived by her husband, Dustin Rankin and their children, Karis and Gabrielle, parents, Brian and Kristie Swanson of Slater, IA; sisters Noelle (Brian) Gibbons of Ankeny, IA, Rachel Swanson, Abigail Swanson, Faith Swanson, and grandmother, Ivy Juon of Slater, IA, as well as many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
Anna Katherine Juon of Madrid, Iowa, formerly of Ankeny and rural Polk City passed from this life on July 21, 2011 at the Madrid Home.
She was born October 12, 1919, to Alva LeRoy and Agnes Hazel (Sweeney) Darnall in Des Moines, Iowa. Anna attended and graduated from East High School in Des Moines where she was a member of the swim team and one of only a few women who received an athletic letter at the time. Anna worked as a comptometer operator for Flynn Dairy. During that time she met and later married Elmer Juon. They were introduced by her co-worker Ivy Helland who eventually became her sister-in-law. After marriage, Elmer and Anna farmed south of Alleman and raised three children. Anna spent many years as a member of the Y-4 Club, 4-H leader and CCD teacher at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Elkhart, and in later years was a proud Perky Penguin.
Anna loved baking, needlework, doing word searches, attending church, going for coffee or out to eat with her friends, and spending time with family, especially her long awaited great-granddaughters.
Anna is preceded in death by her parents; husband; cousin, Francis Booe, who was like a sister to her; and her son, David in 2010.
Survivors include children, Kenneth (Sarah) Juon of Rhinelander, WI; Constance (Carl) Duling of Madrid, IA; and daughter-in-law Sharon Juon of Waterloo, IA. Grandchildren include Bryce (Alyssa) Duling of Gladstone, MO; Kelly (Jeff) Brozek of Ames, IA; Allison Duling of Fort Dodge, IA; Jennifer Juon of Waterloo, IA; Lindsay (Alan) Holt of Indianapolis, IN; and Emma Juon of Rhinelander, WI. Great-grandchildren are Emily Holt of Indianapolis and Gabrielle Brozek of Ames.
David Christian Juon, 62, of Waterloo, IA, died at his home Friday, January 8, following a heart attack. He was born August 5, 1947, in Des Moines, son of Elmer and Anna Darnell Juon. He graduated from North Polk High School in 1965 and Iowa State University in 1972 with a degree in English, Speech, and Broadcast Journalism.
He married Sharon Dunker on September 7, 1968 in Peoria, IL. Dave served in the US Army 1968-1970. He started as Public Affairs Director of WHBF TV Station in Rock Island and then joined John Deere in November 1973 in human resources, currently working as Supervisor of the John Deere Regional Training Center in Waterloo.
Dave was a member of the Waterloo School Board for six years and currently chair of the Community Education Advisory Committee; past chair of the Waterloo Civil Service Commission; a Deacon, Elder, choir member and chair of the Music and Worship Committee at Westminster Presbyterian Church; member of Spokesmen Club; Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors; past president of the Black Hawk County Iowa State University Alumni Club; and Audubon Neighborhood Association Board.
He was awarded the Service Key from ISU Club of Black Hawk County and Dave and Sharon were named Parents of the Year from the West High Athletic Boosters Club.
Dave was very active in his community and within his church, but he especially enjoyed being with his family…and being Iowa State fans. He loved fishing!

A family celebration took place in Mesa, Ariz., in March.
While catching up with my family over Spring Break, mom shared a story that happened just this past week when she was at a local genealogical society (Hamilton Heritage Hunters) meeting. After introductions, someone walked up and inquired if she (Pat Juon) was related to Fern Juon, and yes, Fern was her mother-in-law. It turns out Fern had been her private duty nurse at age 20 when she had major surgery – 65 years ago – and she still remembered Fern fondly for her TLC (tender-loving-care).
Fern was private duty nurse at the Hamilton County Hospital (now Hamilton Hospital) from the ~1940’s to 1960’s. She passed away from cancer when I was in middle school (1982), but to this day, my parents get stopped in the grocery store, etc. by people who connect the name and credit Fern for being the “reason I’m alive”. That’s quite a legacy, to be remembered so fondly so many years later!
